Hallmuir P.O.W. Chapel, Lockerbie

Hallmuir P.O.W. Chapel, Lockerbie
As important as the Italian POW Chapel on Orkney, Hallmuir Chapel survives as a living memorial to several hundred Ukranian prisoners of war who were sent from Italy to Scotland in 1947 rather than being handed over to the Russians and a potentially terrifying future. Many of them chose to remain in Scotland, several setting up homes here and integrating into the local community. Being displaced persons in a foreign country, the residents of Hallmuir camp were keen to build their own Chapel so that they could continue to celebrate their own faith and Greek Catholic services are still regularly held here.

Directions from roundabout at Queens Hotel at south end of Lockerbie. Chapel about 1 mile along the Dalton Road.

Open all year. Free admission.
