Eskdale Prehistoric Trail

The parishes of Eskdalemuir and Westerkirk are estimated to have about 60 sites of archaeological importance. The Eskdale Prehistoric Way Marked Trail is an easy to follow route and directs visitors to nine of the best preserved ancient monuments ranging from mysterious 4,000 year old Neolithic stone circles to the impressive ramparts of hill forts built by the Celtic Iron Age tribes and the remains of Romano-British farms. The Prehistoric Trail begins at Bentpath on the B709 just north of Langholm along the western side of the river Esk and continues through the forest to Eskdalemuir village before returning down the eastern side of the valley.

The Trail can be followed in a day either by bike or car.
