This exhibition tells the secret story of the greatest munitions factory on Earth…
In 1915, Britain was losing the 1st World War through lack of ammunition and 30,000 men and women from all over the world came to work in a massive war factory on the Solway. The highly explosive mixture of nitro-glycerine and nitro-cotton was hand mixed into cordite and packed into the shells and bullets. It was given the name “devil’s porridge” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle when he visited the factory in 1916. The Devil’s Porridge exhibition is situated in Eastriggs on the A75 between Annan and Gretna.

As important as the Italian POW Chapel on Orkney, Hallmuir Chapel survives as a
living memorial to several hundred Ukranian prisoners of war who in 1947 were sent from Italy to Scotland rather than being handed over to the Russians and a potentially terrifying future. Many of them chose to remain in Scotland, several setting up homes here and integrating into the local community. Being displaced persons in a foreign country, the residents of Hallmuir camp were keen to build their own Chapel so that they could continue to celebrate their own faith and Greek Catholic services are still regularly held here.
Directions from roundabout at Queens Hotel at south end of Lockerbie. Chapel about 1 mile along the Dalton Road.
Open all year. Free admission.

The Cruck cottage is a very rare surviving example of a building type that would once have been common in Dumfriesshire and southern Scotland from medieval times through to the early 19th century. Built from oak tree trunks the walls might once have been clay or turf and the roof of heather turf thatch. ‘Improved’ during the course of its life, the cottage was rescued from demolition in the 1970s and gifted to Solway Heritage. It has been carefully repaired using local authentic materials and traditional tools and is now looked after by the Cruck Cottage Heritage Association. The cottage has been fully furnished in the Victorian style to reflect the final stages of its life.
Cruck Cottage can be visited at any time of year with a key available from several key holders in the village of Torthorwald, situated on the A709 Lockerbie to Dumfries road.
