Dryfesdale Lodge Visitors’ Centre - Short History

Originally built as a house for the cemetery caretaker, the building had become surplus to requirements by the 1990s and was standing empty.  The policy of Dumfries & Galloway Council which owns the building is to sell off unneeded cemetery lodges as private homes but it was felt by a number of local people that a private home would not be appropriate for this one being situated as it is at the entrance to the Lockerbie Air Disaster Memorial and Garden of Remembrance.

In 2003, a group of eight Trustees was formed, and with money awarded by the Lockerbie Trust the building was extensively renovated and developed into a centre for the local community, visitors to Lockerbie and to the Memorial Garden.  The Centre was formally opened on 25th October and is a registered Scottish Charity.

Photographs of the renovation work can be seen in the Gallery section here.

20th Anniversary Commemorative Quilt

LEST WE FORGET

This quilt is dedicated to all those who lost their lives
in the events of 21 December 1988.

The 259 leaves on the tree depict the souls who lost
their lives whilst passengers on Pan Am Flight 103.

The 11 pebbles depict the residents of Lockerbie who
lost their lives.

The tree, underpinned by strong roots, represents the
continuity of life reflecting the way the
community of Lockerbie and families of those who
died have striven to overcome this tragedy.

The quilt was made as a remembrance of the twentieth
anniversary of the disaster.

The Quilt

The quilt was designed and made by Kate Henderson, Elma Graham,
Ena McKay, Barbara Watts and Margaret Stockdale, members of
Solway Quilters for Dryfesdale Lodge Visitors’ Centre Trust.

Further information can be found on the BBC website here.

Johnstone Stone

Johnstone Stone

The emblem or crest of the Clan Johnstone contains the motto, "Nunquam Non Paratus" (Never unprepared).  There are different versions of the origin of the winged spur, which appears in the crest.    It is based upon the ancient and loyal respect and esteem between the Bruce family and the Johnstone family.
